Poem: Los Angeles by Ben Fama
Hand: Monica McClure
Girl: Lady D

Blue Dot follows a person’s exposure, then reaction to a book of poems.

Ben Fama asked me if I’d be interested in making a video incorporating one of his poems, Los Angeles. The project grew beyond its original intent of a brief visual component to the poem.

This video was released in parallel with Fama’s new book of poems, Fantasy, put out by my friends over at Ugly Duckling Presse.

As with any of my videos, I ask that you use headphone or good speakers and watch in full screen mode.

Positioned in a dark echoing room, two projectors are aimed at two basins of water resting on two speakers. The aesthetics of the installation bring to mind the grid-like, abstracted early computer graphics of the 70’s with an additional layer of natural processing via the vibration and sloshing of the water. The room could be seen as the central node of some biologically-driven spacecraft.

Blasts of synthetic sounds come from the speakers, creating a variety of interference patterns in the reflected images as the relationship between the two projected entities progresses.

One screen flashes, then the next. Particles of light trickle down from the reflected images. The two entities engage in a cacophonous sonic language that moves from lust to war, synchronization to battle until they are destroyed.

Huge thanks to Nick Emmet for design consultation and construction and Matt Ching for shoot + installation assistance.

Fertile Swipe - Wallet

The Fertile Swipe, 2013-16 is an interactive video performance lecture on the topic of food created for specifically for the 4-sided, seamless video cube dining experience of Monkey Town. Performed over 100 times at EYEBEAM—Chelsea, Manhattan’s new media cultural center—during the summer of 2013, it was performed for an additional four weeks when the traveling version of Monkey Town made its way to Denver, Colorado in 2014, and then Austin, TX in 2015/16.

Will Rahilly Monkey Town Denver CO

The above is a segment of the performance in which the audience watches the screens alone, as most of it is meant to be seen alongside the performer. The character, “The Mother,” who has broken through Will’s Power Point presentation, explains where she came from.

Thank you to Mark and Kristen Sink for the photos from Denver above.
